Annual Student Survey

Annual Student Survey
12 February 2023

In December 2022, 2,000 students were surveyed by Censuswide about their gambling habits. The research was commissioned by GAMSTOP and Ygam and repeated the same questions as the previous year's research, with the addition of the Short-form PGSI - a scoring system used to measure at-risk behaviour in people experiencing problem gambling. The survey revealed some interesting insights into student problem gambling in the UK.

Of the 2,000 students surveyed, 71% had gambled in the last 12 months, with 28% being classified as being at moderate risk of harm and 24% exhibiting behaviour characterised as ‘problem gambling’. When asked if gambling had impacted their university experience, half of all respondents said it had. According to respondents, missing lectures, lower grades and trouble paying for bills, food and accommodation were the most highly-reported impacts of gambling, leading to some students needing to borrow money from friends and family or getting payday loans.
